You sometimes get one of those rare places where you can literally taste the atmosphere as soon as you walk in: Chop Shop opposite the Theatre Royal Haymarket is one of those places. All I did was go in for a cocktail (try their New Year’s Kiss: Cherry Heering with a brown sugar cube, topped with prosecco), but it took a mere half an hour of perving over the diners’ meals and smelling the mouth-watering aromas in the air to wear down my resistance to the theatre menu.
For £19, I enjoyed their potted smoked trout and rare steak with shallots, upgraded with a portion of fries and a glass of one of the smoothest Malbecs I’ve tasted in a long while. For an extra £3, dessert is on offer, but I’ll have to save some room for it on my schedule for the next time I’m in the area and not seeing a show – on a separate note: if you can beg, borrow or steal some tickets to the RSC’s double-bill of Love’s Labour’s Lost and Much Ado About Nothing, it’ll be the perfect post-meal night out.
Chop Shop is at 66 Haymarket, SW1Y.
